How to Check a Mastodon Name on Different Servers

A Mastodon account has a full handle such as @name@mastodon.social. The same name can exist on different servers because each server manages its own accounts. Availability on one server says nothing conclusive about another.

Check your chosen server

Use the Mastodon name check as a starting point for its supported server, then confirm in that server's signup flow. To check another server, visit that server directly, read its rules and registration status, and test the name there. A server may be closed to new registrations or may reserve a name even if a public lookup is inconclusive.

Choose more than a short name

Consider moderation policies, community, reliability, and account export options when selecting a server. Federation lets many servers interact, but individual servers can limit or block connections, so visibility is not universal. Share the complete handle, including the server, when inviting people to follow you.
