Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between my public IP address and local/private IP address?

Your public IP is a unique address assigned by your ISP that identifies your router to the entire internet. Your local (private) IP is assigned by your home router and only identifies your specific device inside your home network (LAN).

Why does my IP address change periodically, and how often does it happen?

Most ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses using DHCP, which changes your IP address every few days, weeks, or whenever you restart your router. This allows ISPs to optimize address allocation, while static IPs are usually paid extras.

How accurately can a website determine my physical location using my IP address?

IP geolocation databases can accurately identify your country, region, and city, but they cannot pinpoint your physical home address or street location. The coordinates shown usually point to your ISP's routing center or local hub.

Does using a VPN or Tor change my IP address, and does this tool detect it?

Yes. Using a VPN, proxy, or Tor routes your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to an external server, masking your real IP with the server's public IP. This tool will display the VPN's IP address rather than your residential one.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6, and why do I see both or only one?

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g., 192.168.1.1) and is running out of unique combinations. IPv6 is the modern 128-bit replacement (e.g., 2001:db8::). If your ISP supports dual-stack networks, you will see both; otherwise, you'll only see IPv4.
