Discord Usernames After the Discriminator Change
Discord replaced the old name-and-four-digit-discriminator system with unique usernames. A username identifies an account for friend requests and verification; a display name is what people usually see in conversation.
Current username rules
Discord's username guidance says usernames are 2–32 characters, case-insensitive and forced lowercase. Letters, numbers, underscores, and periods are permitted; two consecutive periods are not. Discord also applies its Community Guidelines. Check a proposed name in the official account settings even if a Discord name check suggests availability.
Use the other name fields
A display name can contain spaces, capitals, and many special characters, and it does not have to be unique. Server nicknames may appear in a particular server when permissions allow them. Discord says a username can be changed up to twice per week, while display names can be changed more often.
For a community account, share the exact username alongside an official link or profile. Similar display names do not establish identity; verify the full account before trusting an unexpected message.
Share the identity people can verify
When inviting someone to connect, send the exact username and, where possible, a profile or community link. A display name can be duplicated, so it should not be the only evidence that an account belongs to a creator or support team. The old discriminator is no longer a reliable part of current contact instructions.
If a preferred handle is taken, try a readable variation using permitted characters rather than a lookalike spelling. Discord's checker or a public search may miss reserved names or account-specific restrictions. After changing a handle, update website and community instructions so people do not continue searching for the former text. Keep the display name familiar during a transition.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can two accounts share a display name? Yes. Display names need not be unique; inspect the account's unique username and profile when identity matters.
Are periods allowed anywhere? Discord's published rule forbids two consecutive periods. Test the candidate in the live editor for any additional restriction.
Can I change the username every day? Discord's published limit is up to two changes per week. A display name can change more frequently.
