Tumblr Username vs Blog URL: What Changes When You Rename?

A Tumblr blog name appears in its public address, such as example.tumblr.com. A readable name helps people recognize the blog, but the URL alone does not guarantee search visibility.

Primary and secondary blogs

Your primary Tumblr blog is attached to your account. You can also create secondary blogs with their own names and URLs. These blog types have different social features, so check Tumblr’s current help before choosing one for a community project.

Before changing a name

Changing a blog name changes its URL. Tumblr warns that links to the old address may stop working. Make a list of links you control, update them after the rename, and tell collaborators who link to the blog.

Tumblr says a previous username can become available to others after 24 hours. That is a possibility, not a safe transfer procedure or a guaranteed reservation. Do not tell another person to rely on the old address while changing it.

A Tumblr name check can help compare ideas. Confirm availability in Tumblr’s own settings, then test the final blog URL from a signed-out browser.
