Can You Change Your Reddit Username?

Reddit’s username help says you cannot change a username once it is finalized, including its capitalization. Before relying on a new name, check the options shown in your own account settings.

If your username is not finalized

Some signup paths may present an automatically assigned name and an option to choose another before you finalize it. Follow the current prompts in Reddit; do not assume every account has the same option or the same deadline.

If your username is finalized

You can continue using the account under its current name or create a separate account with an available name. Reddit says usernames cannot be reused after an account is deleted, so deleting the old account will not free its name for a new one. Review Reddit’s rules if you operate more than one account.

A Reddit name check can help explore alternatives, but confirm availability in Reddit’s signup flow. Update links you control when you begin using a new account.

Decide what you need to change

A Reddit username is different from a profile display name and from a community-specific user flair. If the visible label in one community is the issue, check whether that community lets you edit flair. If you need a different account username, creating another account may be the practical option, but posts and karma do not automatically transfer to it.

Before switching accounts, review any moderation roles, saved links, messages, and communities you rely on. Tell people about the new account only where it is useful and allowed by community rules. Keep access to the old account if you need its history. A name checker can help brainstorm, but Reddit's own signup flow determines whether a proposed username is accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can Reddit Support rename an established account for me? Reddit's normal settings do not provide a general rename path. Check its current help for any account-specific exception.

Will a new account inherit karma or subscriptions? No automatic transfer should be assumed. Record the communities you want to rejoin and follow their rules.

Can I edit what others see without changing the username? You may be able to change a profile display name or community flair. Those labels do not alter the underlying account username.
