Check Your Broadband Bandwidth Before a Video Call
You have 10 minutes before the most important call of the quarter. Your slides are ready. Your camera is on. You have no idea if your connection will hold.
Here's what to check and what to do if it won't.
What Video Calls Actually Need
Video conferencing platforms are more efficient than most people assume — but they still have hard minimums. Here's what each scenario requires:

The upload number is the one most people ignore. Your ISP's "500 Mbps plan" is almost always 500 Mbps download with a much lower upload ceiling — sometimes as low as 20 Mbps, sometimes as low as 5 Mbps. Run an Internet Speed Test and check both numbers before you join.
The 10-Minute Pre-Call Protocol
8 minutes out: Run the speed test. Note your upload speed and ping specifically. If upload is above 5 Mbps and ping is below 50ms, you're fine. If not, proceed to step 2.
6 minutes out — bandwidth recovery:
- Ask anyone on your network to pause streaming, downloads, or gaming
- Close browser tabs that auto-reload (news sites, dashboards)
- Pause any cloud sync in the background (Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud) — these consume upload bandwidth silently
- Disconnect other devices from Wi-Fi if possible
4 minutes out: Run the speed test again. If numbers improved, you're set. If still low — move to the router.
2 minutes out — last resort:
- Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection if your laptop has a port (or use a USB-C adapter)
- Enable your phone's hotspot as a backup connection — LTE/5G often outperforms congested home Wi-Fi
Understanding Ping (Latency)
Ping measures the round-trip time for a data packet to travel from your device to the test server and back. On video calls, high ping creates the awkward "we both started talking at the same time" problem.
- Under 20ms — excellent, imperceptible delay
- 20–50ms — good, normal for most broadband connections
- 50–100ms — noticeable on international calls, acceptable for domestic
- Over 150ms — significant delay, audio/video sync issues become apparent
High ping is usually a routing problem or network congestion, not a bandwidth problem. Switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet often reduces ping by 10–30ms immediately.
The Camera Toggle Decision
If you run the test and your upload is genuinely below 1.5 Mbps with no fix available, turn off your camera for the call. Audio-only uses roughly 1% of the bandwidth that HD video does.
It's a better look to explain "I'm on a weak connection today" than to spend the call frozen mid-sentence.
Run the Internet Speed Test before every high-stakes call. Ten minutes of preparation beats apologizing for lag in front of a client.
