If you work remotely, stream, or create content, your upload speed is the number that actually controls your day.
The Asymmetry Most People Don't Notice
Traditional cable internet is designed for consumers who watch, not creators who publish. A "500 Mbps" plan is almost always 500 Mbps download with upload capped at 20–50 Mbps — sometimes lower.
This made sense when households primarily streamed Netflix and browsed the web. It doesn't make sense anymore.

What upload speed affects:

Fiber vs Cable: Why the Infrastructure Matters
Cable internet (the most common type in North America and much of Europe) uses shared coaxial infrastructure originally built for TV signals. It's physically optimized for downstream (download) traffic. Upload is tacked on and deprioritized.
Fiber internet uses dedicated optical fiber for both directions. Most fiber plans offer symmetrical speeds — the same bandwidth down and up. A "1 Gbps fiber plan" typically delivers 1 Gbps both ways.
If your work is upload-heavy and you're on cable, switching to fiber is often the single highest-impact infrastructure upgrade available to you.

- Zoom calls where you look frozen to everyone else, but everyone looks fine to you
- Cloud backups that run for hours overnight and still aren't finished
- Slack file uploads that timeout or take minutes for files under 100 MB
