Why Your Wi-Fi is Slow Even With a Fast Internet Plan
You're paying for gigabit internet. Your speed test shows 47 Mbps. Someone is lying — and it's probably not your ISP.
The gap between your plan and your actual performance almost always lives inside your home network, not outside it.
What Your ISP Actually Guarantees
When a provider sells you a "1 Gbps plan," they're guaranteeing the speed at the point where the cable enters your home — typically at the modem. Everything after that is your equipment, your signal, your problem.
The path from modem → router → air → your device introduces losses at every step. By the time data reaches your laptop wirelessly, you can easily be at 5–10% of your nominal plan speed.
The Three-Test Diagnostic
Run these three tests in order and note the results. The comparison tells you exactly where your problem is.
Test 1: Wireless at your usual spot Sit where you normally work. Run the Internet Speed Test. Write down the download and upload speeds.
Test 2: Wireless right next to the router Move to within 1 meter of the router. Run the test again. If this number is significantly higher than Test 1, your problem is distance and walls — not the ISP.
Test 3: Wired via Ethernet Plug directly into the router or modem with an Ethernet cable. Run the test. This is the ground truth — what your ISP is actually delivering.

What "Good" Numbers Actually Look Like
Most people don't know how to interpret speed test results. Here's a practical benchmark:
- Below 25 Mbps download — struggles with HD video streaming, frequent buffering
- 25–100 Mbps — adequate for most households with 1–3 active users
- 100–500 Mbps — comfortable for remote work, video calls, simultaneous users
- 500 Mbps+ — exceeds practical needs for most home users
Upload speed matters separately. Video calls (Zoom, Teams) need at least 3–5 Mbps upload for HD quality. If your upload is below this and calls are choppy, your ISP may be heavily asymmetric on upload.
The Most Common Culprits
Dual-band confusion. Most modern routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band has longer range but lower speeds. The 5 GHz band is faster but shorter range. If your device auto-connects to 2.4 GHz when 5 GHz is available, you're leaving speed on the table.
Router age. A 5+ year old router may be the bottleneck even with a fast plan. Router hardware has a performance ceiling.
Channel congestion. In apartment buildings, dozens of Wi-Fi networks compete for the same channels. A router that automatically selects the least congested channel helps significantly.
Run the Test First
Before you call your ISP, upgrade your router, or buy a mesh system, run the Internet Speed Test with all three scenarios. It takes five minutes and tells you exactly where to direct your money and frustration.
